ASEAN-IPR Council Meets on Peace Resilience
The ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation Governing Council held its 41st meeting on August 28, 2026, in Manila.
The Governing Council of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR) convened for its 41st meeting in Manila, Philippines, on August 28, 2026. The council deliberated on ongoing and new initiatives in research and capacity-building aimed at bolstering peace resilience and conflict prevention across Southeast Asia.
The discussions were framed by the long-term vision outlined in ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future. The meeting sought to align the institute's work with this strategic blueprint. A key focus was on expanding the scope and impact of ASEAN-IPR's activities to address a spectrum of security challenges.
Focus on Traditional and Non-Traditional Threats
The council examined ways for the institute to tackle both traditional and non-traditional security issues. This dual approach is intended to make the region's peace architecture more comprehensive and resilient. The institute plans to engage a broad range of stakeholders as both collaborators and beneficiaries in this process.
This strategy reinforces ASEAN-IPR's established role as a Track 1.5 institution. In this capacity, it facilitates dialogue between official government channels (Track 1) and non-governmental experts (Track 2), directly supporting the goals of the ASEAN Political-Security Community.
Leadership and Attendance
The meeting was chaired by H.E. Ambassador Evangeline Ong Jimenez-Ducrocq. She serves as both the Chair of the Governing Council and the Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN. Members of the Governing Council attended the session.
H.E. Nararya Sanggramawijaya Soeprapto, the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Community and Corporate Affairs, was also present. He attended on behalf of the ASEAN Secretary-General, acting in his capacity as an Ex-Officio Member of the Governing Council.
Interface with Advisory Board
Following the council meeting, the 12th Interface Meeting between the Governing Council and the ASEAN-IPR Advisory Board was held. This joint session provided a platform for direct exchange between the institute's governing body and its panel of external experts.
The interface discussed collaborative initiatives to strengthen the institute's peacebuilding mandate. The dialogue aimed to harness the Advisory Board's insights to enhance the practical impact of ASEAN-IPR's programs across the region.
The meetings concluded with deliberations on specific project proposals and partnerships intended to translate these discussions into actionable outcomes. The proceedings underscored the institute's ongoing institutional development within the ASEAN ecosystem.
